The EC Directorate General for Trade is reviewing its Strategy for the Enforcement of Intellectual Property rights in Third Countries, and it plans to update its current policy with “the adoption of a new Commission Communication by the end of 2011.” As part of its review, it held an open hearing on May 10. Terri Beswick testified for Health Action International, urging the EC “to use caution in exporting their acquis on enforcement to third countries” and “not to require other countries to adhere to ACTA through for example bilateral trade agreements.” She also noted the lack of credible data to support industry claims and the lack of transparency and opportunities for civil society to participate. The HAI Staff Blog on the Hearing has further information on her testimony. (See also the EC Page on the Consultation.)
