This article describes the ideas discussed at recent events hosted by Creative Commons (CC) and the Movement for a Better Internet. These events aimed to understand community perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI) regarding the use of CC-licensed content. Concerns were raised about transparency, bias, fairness, and proper attribution in AI, with some creators worried about their work being used in AI training without appropriate credit or consent. At the 2023 CC Global Summit, themed “AI and the Commons,” surveys were used to gather participant opinions. The participants formed three opinion groups:
Group A (Moat Protectors), focusing on CC’s current expertise and noncommercial AI training; Group B (AI Oversight Maximalists), advocating for maximal oversight actions by the CC community; and Group C (Equitable Benefit Seekers), emphasizing traditional knowledge protection and equitable benefits from AI. No group comprised a majority of the CC community, but groups B and C were the larger of the three.
