On behalf of WCL PIJIP and the Global Network on Copyright User Rights, Andrés Izquierdo attended a meeting organized by Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO. The meeting had the participation of more than 40 accredited NGOs and industry stakeholder groups. This meeting served to highlight the pivotal role played by NGOs in the Organization’s work. To the meeting also attended KEI, IFLA, and Innovarte.
DG Daren Tang, accompanied by Assistant Director General Eduard Kwakwa, and Assistant Director General Marco Aleman, convened with members of the non-governmental organization (NGO) observer community at WIPO. During his opening address, Mr. Tang emphasized the necessity of adopting a multi-stakeholder approach to address pressing global issues effectively within the intellectual property (IP) system. He stressed the utilization of WIPO’s technical expertise to extend the reach of IP to diverse communities and foster an inclusive IP ecosystem. Recognizing the crucial engagement of NGOs with communities, beneficiaries, and various stakeholders, Mr. Tang expressed the value of such discussions.
The session was moderated by Ambassador Prof. Muhammadou M.O. Kah, the Permanent Representative of the Gambia to the United Nations Office in Geneva. Ambassador Kah highlighted that the dialogue showcased WIPO’s recognition of NGOs as esteemed stakeholders in the global IP system. This gathering, held during the WIPO Assemblies spanning from July 6 to 14, 2023.
